Midday Roundup: More than 150 arrests in Texas biker shootout

Street fighters. More than 150 people are in jail in Waco, Texas, following a brawl-turned-gunfight between five motorcycle gangs. Nine people died and at least 17 were hospitalized. The melee erupted around noon Sunday at a Twin Peaks restaurant that hosts “bike nights.” “In my nearly 35 years of law enforcement experience, this is the most violent and gruesome scene that I have dealt with,” Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said. Police were already on the scene when the fight broke out, and no law enforcement officers or bystanders were hurt. The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission forced the restaurant to close for the week amid threats of continued violence there.

Hard landing. One U.S. Marine died and 21 others were injured when an Osprey aircraft crash-landed at Bellows Air Force Station on Oahu, Hawaii. The MV-22 Osprey can take off and land like a helicopter but flies like an airplane. It was being used for training at the time of the crash. The Osprey has a history of mechanical failures and test-flight accidents. The military nearly scrapped the program in the early 2000s, but has since deployed the aircraft to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Double taxation. The Supreme Court ruled today that part of Maryland’s tax law is unconstitutional. The decision could have costly effects on other states, too. The court said Maryland should give residents a full tax credit for taxes paid on income earned in other states. Some of the state’s taxpayers could receive refunds, and the change could cost Maryland as much as $42 million per year in revenue moving forward, The Washington Post reported.

Cracked windshield. An object may have struck an Amtrak train just prior to last week’s deadly derailment in Philadelphia. Investigators are looking into evidence, including markings on the windshield of the train. Could it have been rock or even a bullet? The National Transportation Safety Board has asked the FBI to investigate. Projectiles reportedly struck other trains traveling the same track prior to the accident. Engineer Brandon Bostian suffered a concussion and said he doesn’t remember the moments leading up to the crash. Amtrak resumed service on the line between Philadelphia and New York this morning.

Pay day. The Clintons have raked in more than $25 million over the past 16 months for paid speeches, according to new disclosures by Hillary Clinton. The former secretary of state delivered her last paid speech on March 19 for a fee of $250,000. She took home another $5 million in book sales since the beginning of last year.
