Midday Roundup: More than 100 missing after Washington landslide

Swept away. Officials say about 108 people are missing after a 1-square-mile landslide in Washington state on Saturday. A wall of mud and debris crashed down on State Route 530 near the town of Oso, about 55 miles north of Seattle. Authorities compiled the list and reported the number of people missing this morning. Eight people have been found dead in the debris field. Five people, including one infant, survived the landslide, and about 30 homes were destroyed. Rescuers said they still hope to find people alive, although the odds of survival diminish as time goes on.

Mock trial. An Egyptian court on Monday sentenced 529 people to die after only two sessions in a mass trial in which only about 150 defendants were present. The Egyptian government charged the accused with murder, attempted murder, and stealing government weapons in an attack on a police station outside Cairo in August. One police officer was killed in the attack. The convictions are subject to appeal and likely will be overturned, rights lawyers said. They are part of a series of mass trials for supporters of former President Mohamed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood. Lawyers for the defendants said judges have denied them access to court documents and proceedings, and claim the trials are part of a political crackdown on opposition to the current government.

Carter vs. Baptists. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has written a new book that criticizes the Pope and the Southern Baptist Convention for their attitude toward women. Carter accuses religious leaders of falsely interpreting Scripture by saying women are inferior in the eyes of God. On NBC’s Meet the Press this past weekend, Carter blamed Catholics and Baptists for encouraging mistreatment of women. “When [men] see that the Pope and the Southern Baptist Convention and others say that women can’t serve as priests and so forth equally with men, they say, ‘Well, I’ll treat my wife the way I want to because she’s inferior to me.’” The official Southern Baptist position statement about the topic states: “While Scripture teaches that a woman’s role is not identical to that of men, and that pastoral leadership is assigned to men, it also teaches that women are equal in value to men.”

Clearer picture. Malaysian officials said today they have proof that Flight 370, missing for more than two weeks, crashed into the ocean. The revelation came from a new analysis of satellite data that indicates the plane flew “to a remote location, far from any possible landing sites,” Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said during a press conference. The Australian government is coordinating the search for the plane’s wreckage in the Southern Indian Ocean, about 1,200 miles offshore from the city of Perth.
