Midday Roundup: Gunmen attack 'Draw Muhammad' event in Texas

Backlash. Gunmen opened fire Sunday night outside an anti-Islam event in Garland, Texas. The two assailants wounded an unarmed security guard before being shot and killed by police. The American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) sponsored the “Draw Muhammad” contest, which offered $10,000 for the best cartoon drawing of the founder of Islam. Islamic tradition forbids depictions of Muhammad, and cartoons of him have sparked violence around the world. The AFDI had paid $10,000 for extra security at the Texas event. The FBI this morning searched the Phoenix apartment of Elton Simpson, believed to be one of the gunmen, ABC News reported. The resident was known to authorities and had been the subject of a terror investigation.

A family name. Prince William and his wife, Kate, named their newborn daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, royal officials said today. William and Kate introduced Britain’s new baby princess to the world in a photo-op outside London’s St. Mary’s Hospital on Saturday evening, just 12 hours after Kate checked in to give birth. The baby weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces. Her name is a nod to her grandfather, Charles, the heir to the throne. Her middle names honor her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and William’s late mother, Princess Diana. She will officially be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

Calm in the city. The citywide curfew has been lifted in Baltimore. Last Tuesday, after riots sparked by the death of an African-American man in police custody, officials asked residents to stay in their homes between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. But Sunday, the city’s mayor, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, ended those restrictions. Blake added that the National Guard presence in the city would begin fading as well. Six Baltimore police officers were charged Friday with crimes related to the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray.

Help is on the way. Pakistan is sending relief assistance to Nepal in the wake of last month’s devastating earthquake. Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry told reporters his country would send a 50-member team of doctors, surgeons, paramedics, and technicians and a search-and-rescue team with state-of-the-art equipment. The 7.8-magnitude earthquake claimed thousands of lives and left countless others injured or homeless. The United States has also been heavily involved in relief efforts, sending personnel and 45 tons of supplies while adding an additional $10 million in relief funds.

Smashing success. At the box office this weekend, The Avengers: Age of Ultron earned the second-biggest movie opening of all time. The superhero sequel took in about $188 million over the weekend. The film opened first overseas, and worldwide, it’s raked in over $600 million in less than two weeks.
