Midday Roundup: Carolina sharks won't stop biting

Shark-infested waters. A man in his late 60s suffered severe shark bites Wednesday at Ocracoke Island, N.C., bringing the number of shark attacks off the Carolina coast this summer to nearly a dozen. The average is six attacks per year in the Carolinas, according to CNN. Warmer waters have brought more sharks to the beaches earlier than normal in the year, and drought conditions have made the water at the shoreline saltier, attracting more sharks and fish, experts say.

Email archive. The State Department this week released the first in a series of documents from the personal email server Hilary Clinton used while secretary of state. The document dump included about 3,000 pages of the more than 50,000-page compilation Clinton turned over to the government last year. The State Department labeled about two dozen of the documents as classified, though Clinton insisted no classified information passed through her personal email server. Also in the documents came revelations that a controversial former Clinton White House aide, Sidney Blumenthal, advised Clinton on more than just Libya. He critiqued her speeches and briefed her on international political developments.

False alarm. Police gave the “all clear” this morning at Washington’s Navy Yard after a search revealed no evidence of a shooting. Someone inside a building at the Navy’s administrative complex reported sounds of gunfire this morning, leading to a lockdown. The Navy Yard was the site of a mass shooting in September 2013, when a gunman killed 12 people and then died in a shootout with police.

Eating more chicken. The votes are in, and America has chosen its favorite fast-food restaurant. The American Customer Satisfaction Index surveyed 5,000 people across the country, and Chick-fil-A notched the highest score ever given to a fast-food chain in the survey. Dunkin’ Donuts was among the top vote-getters, while Chipotle was No. 2 on the list. The lowest scores belonged Taco Bell, Burger King, and Jack in the Box, with McDonalds dead last.

Backing away. Sponsors and entertainers are bailing from the Miss USA pageant after co-owner Donald Trump made derogatory comments about Mexican immigrants while announcing his presidential campaign. NBC Universal will no longer air the July 12 pageant. Other performers and sponsors have dropped out of the pageant, as well, including: football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith, rapper Flo Rida, Macy’s department stores, and planned hosts Cheryl Burke and Thomas Roberts. In defining his stance on illegal immigration during his announcement speech last month, Trump said: “The U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else’s problems. When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems to us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
