Midday Roundup: Boehner issues shutdown warning over immigration

Security line. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, took a stand this weekend against the president’s executive action on immigration, saying he would allow the Department of Homeland Security to shut down over it. At issue is a bill, already passed in the House, that funds the department but takes away money to support the president’s immigration program. The plan allows people who are in the United States illegally to avoid getting deported under certain conditions. Funding for Homeland Security will expire in two weeks, but Senate Democrats have stalled the bill’s approval with filibusters.

Senseless. A 44-year-old mother who had just finished a driving lesson with her teen was gunned down in front of her Las Vegas home Saturday night in what police are calling a road-rage incident. The victim, Tammy Meyers, had four children and one grandchild. Authorities say another driver followed her and opened fire outside her home, where her family had gathered earlier in the day to celebrate her 20-year-old son’s birthday. Police have released a sketch of the suspect and a description of his car.

50 shades of green. Talk about dominant. The movie Fifty Shades of Grey had the best-ever international opening weekend for an R-rated movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In North America, the film grossed about $94.4 million in ticket sales over the weekend. An online petition against the movie, which features graphic depictions of sexual violence, has so far fallen short of its goal of 150,000 signatures, but about 108,000 people did sign and pledge not to see the movie.

Back to school. Schools in Liberia reopened today after a six-month closure due to the Ebola virus epidemic. Students had to line up and have their temperatures taken before they could enter school buildings. About 3,800 people in Liberia have died during the epidemic. Though Ebola continues to spread, the epidemic has slowed significantly in Liberia, with fewer than 10 new cases reported weekly for the past month.

Live from New York. Saturday Night Live celebrated 40 years on the air Sunday night with a three-and-a-half hour anniversary special. An hour-long red-carpet event with stars and show alumni preceded the actual show. It aired live from New York’s Studio 8H at NBC, which has been SNL’s headquarters since premiering on a Saturday night in October 1975.
