Midday Roundup: Accused Planned Parenthood shooter unfit for trial

Decree of incompetence. The man accused of attacking a Planned Parenthood facility in Colorado Springs, Colo., is too mentally unstable to stand trial, a judge declared Wednesday. Psychologists said Robert Dear, who has admitted to carrying out the attack that killed three people and injured nine, suffers from a delusional disease. In courtroom outbursts since his arrest, he has declared himself a “warrior for the babies” and called the judge a “filthy animal.” The judge said Dear’s perceptions and understandings, including the belief that the FBI is persecuting him, “are not rational and are not grounded in reality.” The judge ordered treatment for Dear, whose competency will be reassessed in August.

Mending fences. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Donald Trump met today at GOP headquarters to try to work out their differences and unite the Republican Party after a brutal presidential primary season. Ryan had hesitated to support Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, but the two said in a joint statement after the meeting they were “totally committed to working together.” Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus tweeted, “The meeting was great. It was a very positive step toward party unity.” Trump also met this morning with other House Republican leaders and plans to meet with senators later today.

Olympic trial. The Brazilian Senate voted today to impeach President Dilma Rousseff, who will be suspended for up to 180 days before and during her trial. The Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro falls smack in the middle of that timeframe, from Aug. 5-21. But the International Olympic Committee (IOC) insists the games will go on. Much of the remaining prep work is operational or logistical and will not be affected by Brazil’s political situation, IOC chairman Thomas Bach said.

Infamous souvenir. Floridian George Zimmerman is auctioning the handgun he used to shoot and kill Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager. Martin’s death in 2012 not only made national headlines but also sparked a nationwide debate about public stereotypes of young black men. In an interview with Orlando, Fla., TV station WOFL, Zimmerman said he just got the pistol back from the U.S. Justice Department, which took it after he was acquitted in Martin’s 2012 shooting death. “If I sell it and it sells, I move past it. Otherwise, it’s going in a safe for my grandkids and never to be used or seen again,” Zimmerman said.

Intentional explosion. Federal investigators said Tuesday that arson caused the massive explosion at a Texas fertilizer plant in 2013. The intentionally set fire at the West Fertilizer Co. in West, Texas, ignited tons of ammonium nitrate, killing 15 people and leaving a crater 90 feet wide and 10 feet deep. Investigators did not comment about possible suspects or motive in the case.
