An estimated 17 people were injured late Wednesday night when a car drove into a crowd of sports fans in Los Cabos celebrating Team Mexico's win against Czechia in the World Cup. Footage of the incident began circulating on the internet, showing a sedan-type car splitting the crowd in half before crashing into a light pole. The Mexican Football Federation released a Thursday statement acknowledging the tragedy and expressing solidarity with the injured and their families.

Arnoldo Alberto Renteria Santana, the secretary general of the Los Cabos municipality, reported that all the injured were transported to two local hospitals and other private facilities. Officials continued working to collect medical information to formally determine the number of people injured in the hit-and-run, according to a Thursday statement from Baja California Sur Attorney General’s Office. Officials said the driver’s motivation remained unclear.

What are the victims’ conditions? One hospital, IMSS Bienestar, initially received two patients with non-life-threatening injuries and one person with severe injuries, according to a Thursday statement. The hospital issued an update about 10 hours later, and confirmed that 11 individuals were treated for injuries received during the ramming. Seven patients had been released and four remained under medical observation, according to the hospital's update.
