Memphis officers injured after U.S. marshals kill fugitive

An angry crowd clashed with police officers in Memphis, Tenn., Wednesday night after U.S. marshals shot and killed a man in a working-class neighborhood. People in the crowd threw rocks, and 25 officers suffered mostly minor injuries. Police used tear gas and dispersed the crowd by 11 p.m. Wednesday night, police director Michael Rallings said at a news conference Thursday morning. Three people were arrested.

The Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force went to a home in the Frayser neighborhood to search for a suspect with felony warrants, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Keli McAlister said. Marshals saw the man get into a car and ram task force vehicles before coming out with a weapon. The marshals opened fire, killing the man. Memphis police was called in to help with crowd control after the shooting.

One local official identified the suspect as Brandon Webber and said he was shot in his family’s front yard. Family members confirmed to The Daily Memphian that Webber, 21, died. Rallings asked residents to wait for the TBI to finish its investigation of the shooting before spreading possible misinformation.
