Melting glacier exposes bodies of hikers missing for over 30 years
A melting glacier in the Swiss Alps revealed the remains of two Belgian men missing for over three decades, Swiss police reported on Wednesday. A hiker stumbled upon the bodies while hiking the Trift Glacier valley in central-eastern Switzerland in late July. Police recovered the bodies and DNA testing confirmed the identities of two hikers who went missing in 1992, Valais region police reported.
Who were the men? Police did not identify the men by name, but reported their ages as 39 and 41 at the time of their disappearance. Police records showed the men went missing near Weissmies mountain, several dozen miles south of where their bodies were located. Swiss police kept a list of regional missing person reports dating back to 1925, and noted that melting glaciers occasionally reveal the bodies of missing people, according to the release.
