McDonald’s tests meatless burgers


The makers of meat substitutes are duking it out to get their plant-based products into restaurants, and they have recruited McDonald’s and Burger King to join the fray. McDonald’s said Thursday it will test the PLT (plant, lettuce, and tomato) burger in Canada. The 12-week trial in 28 restaurants in southwestern Ontario will begin by the end of the month.

Do fast-food customers want veggie burgers? The PLT, which has a patty made by Beyond Meat, comes six months after Burger King began testing the plant-based Impossible Burger by Impossible Foods, now available nationwide. Carl’s Jr., Del Taco, Little Caesar’s, KFC, and Tim Hortons are all testing or already selling plant-based meat alternatives.
