Marines correct ID in famous World War II photo
A Marine Corps panel announced Thursday that the man at the center of the well-known book Flags of Our Fathers was not one of the six men pictured in the iconic flag-raising photo taken on Iwo Jima during World War II. The man identified by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal as Navy Pharmacist’s Mate 2nd Class John Bradley was actually Private First Class Harold Schultz, the panel found. Two history buffs, who poured over different photographs taken on Iwo Jima on the same day, disputed the identification and prompted the investigation. Bradley, who’s son’s book eventually became a movie directed by Clint Eastwood, did help raise a flag on Iwo Jima, just not the one Rosenthal photographed.
