Manhunt continues in Canada stabbings
Two brothers are suspected of killing 10 people and injuring 18 in a series of knife attacks in an Indigenous community. Damien Sanderson, 31, was found dead Monday near the stabbing sites. As of early Tuesday morning, authorities believe his brother and fellow suspect, Myles Sanderson, 30, is injured and on the run. The incident is one of the deadliest mass killings in Canadian history, prompting the James Smith Cree Nation to declare a state of emergency. Officials said that a vehicle reportedly carrying the two suspects had been seen about 210 miles south of where the stabbings took place in western Canada.
What motivated the stabbings? Bobby Cameron, the chief of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations, suggested in a statement that the attacks could be drug-related. Police said it appears the suspects targeted some of the victims while randomly stabbing others. Mass stabbings are far rarer than mass shootings, yet have occurred elsewhere in the world. In 2014, 29 people died in a slashing and stabbing attack at a train station in Kunming, China.
