Man killed in Trump assassination attempt used body to shield family
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro on Sunday honored Corey Comperatore, who he said died as a hero, protecting his family from bullets during former President Donald Trump’s rally on Saturday. The alleged shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, grazed the president’s ear and critically injured two other bystanders aside from Comperatore. A Secret Service team rushed Trump off stage while another security detail shot and killed Crooks.
Comperatore was the father of two daughters, a firefighter, and a regular churchgoer, Shapiro said during a Sunday address. Flags should fly at half-staff to honor the 50-year-old, the governor ordered. President Joe Biden also acknowledged Comperatore's death during his Saturday night Oval Office address. Comperatore dedicated his life to service and protected others as a fire chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company, said Pennsylvania Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick.
How are the other shooting victims? Both David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, stabilized after receiving severe bullet wounds, according to the Pennsylvania State Police.
What updates have investigators provided? FBI investigators have not identified the shooter’s motive and continue piecing together the sequence of events from Saturday, according to a Sunday update. Investigators collected Crooks’ phone along with other evidence from the attacker’s home and car. The firearm used in the shooting was legally purchased and Crooks was not on the FBI’s radar before Saturday, investigators added.
