Macron’s party wins absolute majority in parliament

French President Emmanuel Macron’s Republic on the Move party has won an absolute majority in the country’s parliamentary elections. The new centrist party won 350 seats in the National Assembly but needed only 289 seats to secure a majority. The Conservative Party came in second with 37 seats. Government spokesman Christophe Castaner said the cabinet rearrangement following the elections would only be technical and not far-reaching. Castaner on Monday told RTL radio Prime Minister Edouard Philippe is set to resign and a new government would be named in the coming days.
