Sen. Lindsay Graham proposes protection for unborn
The legislation, announced Tuesday, would protect unborn babies across the country after 15 weeks of gestation. The proposal marks the most significant attempt in the Senate to protect the unborn since the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade in June. Earlier this year, the Senate failed to pass a Democrat-supported bill that would have established a right to abortion until a baby could survive outside the womb—and beyond, in many cases.
How are Senate Republicans reacting? The bill, sponsored by Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, may divide Senate Republicans. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said whether to support Graham’s bill was an individual Senator’s decision and not a party decision. He added that a lot of Republicans would prefer that the issue be handled at the state level.
