Lane drenches but doesn’t drown Hawaii

Hawaii residents are surveying the damage from Hurricane Lane, now downgraded to a tropical storm. The islands were spared what could have been the first direct hit by hurricane in a quarter century, but Lane still poured more than 4 feet of rain over parts of the Big Island over the weekend. Flooding drove residents from their homes in the city of Hilo, where about 40 people had to be rescued from rising water. Wind from the storm also fueled a wildfire on Maui, damaging buildings and forcing the evacuation of about 100 homes.
