Charles settles in as king
A council of politicians and officials formally declared Charles III king of the United Kingdom on Saturday. The tradition-steeped ceremony known as the Accession Council took place at St. James Palace in London. In his first public speech as king Friday, Charles promised to continue his late mother’s legacy of devotion to the country and the Church of England. He also vowed a life of service and to step away from causes for which he advocated before he became a sovereign.
What will happen to his former titles? The new king said in his speech that his Scottish titles would pass to his son, Prince William. The crown prince will also succeed Charles as the Duke of Cornwall and Prince of Wales. Charles acknowledged that his wife, Camilla, formerly the Duchess of Cornwall, is now The Queen Consort. The title denotes that Camilla is married to the king but is not the sovereign ruler.
