Kim Jong Un uses first world address to insult Trump

North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un escalated his war of words with U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday, and the rogue nation’s foreign minister threatened to detonate a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific Ocean. Ri Yong Ho, in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, called the possible bomb test “the most powerful detonation” ever in the Pacific. Back in Pyongyang, Kim took to state media to lash out at Trump, giving the first direct address to the world by any North Korean leader. He called Trump a “mentally deranged U.S. dotard” and said he would “pay dearly” for his recent threats against North Korea. On Tuesday, during his UN address, Trump said the United States would “totally destroy North Korea” if Kim’s regime launched an attack on a U.S. territory or one of its allies. In response, Kim said his country would consider the “highest level of hard-line countermeasure in history” but did not elaborate on what that might entail. In a tweet early Friday morning, Trump said Kim is “obviously a madman who doesn’t mind starving or killing his people.” North Korea has conducted six nuclear tests since 2006, all in underground sites. A detonation in the Pacific would constitute a major provocation, but it’s not clear how U.S. or world leaders might respond.
