Kim Jong Un tries to mend fences
The leaders of North and South Korea will meet in another summit later this month to try to strengthen their cooperation since denuclearization efforts have stalled. Following a meeting in Pyongyang with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un this week, a South Korean envoy said Kim wants to keep improving his country’s renewed relationship with the United States. At a historic meeting this summer, Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to work toward the end of the North Korean nuclear program. But recent satellite photos have indicated North Korea’s weapons factories were still operating to produce fissile materials to make nuclear weapons.
Chung Eui-yong, head of the South Korean delegation to Pyongyang, said Kim told him that he still had faith in Trump despite diplomatic setbacks. He said Kim emphasized that he has not once talked negatively about Trump to anyone, including his closest advisers. Trump responded Thursday by tweeting, “Kim Jong Un of North Korea proclaims ‘unwavering faith in President Trump.’ Thank you to Chairman Kim. We will get it done together!”
The meeting between the two Koreas will take place Sept. 18–20.
