Kenya deports key opposition figure
The Kenyan government has deported an opposition lawyer who witnessed last week’s mock inauguration of opposition leader Raila Odinga. Kenyan authorities arrested Miguna Miguna on Friday and charged him with treason despite court orders demanding his release. “The illegitimate, despotic regime … forcefully placed me on a late night KLM flight from Nairobi to Amsterdam in flagrant violation of my constitutional rights, five court orders, and common decency,” Miguna said in a statement. He added he would challenge the deportation in court. Interior Ministry spokesman Mwenda Njoka on Wednesday argued Miguna renounced his Kenyan citizenship years ago to become a Canadian citizen and never reclaimed it. Canada granted asylum to Miguna and several other Kenyan students after they were tortured and detained without trial in 1987. Kenya’s opposition has repeatedly denied the legitimacy of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s reelection last year amid deadly protests. Kenyan authorities responded to the mock inauguration by shutting down three television stations and arresting several opposition officials.
