Jury orders Trump to pay woman more than $83 million in defamation trial
The civil trial concluded Friday afternoon with a jury in a Manhattan federal court awarding E. Jean Carroll $83.3 million for defamatory statements by former President Donald Trump. The jury found Trump liable for $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages. The jury consisted of seven men and two women, who deliberated for just under three hours on Friday.
What did Trump say to defame Carroll? A jury found Trump guilty of sexually abusing Carroll and defaming her after the fact during a separate 2023 trial. Carroll was awarded $5 million in total damages during the 2023 trial.
