Leaders of Grace Community Church in California affirmed a new senior pastor on Thursday, more than a year after the death of renowned theologian John MacArthur. The pastor and author, known for his podcast Grace To You, died last July at the age of 86 after contracting pneumonia. MacArthur suffered a number of health issues in the years before his death, namely a heart valve replacement in July 2024 that led to additional complications involving the pastor’s heart, lungs, and kidneys.

Whom did they choose? Elders unanimously chose Nathan Busenitz, who served several years as MacArthur’s personal assistant, according to the church’s Saturday statement. MacArthur pastored Grace for 56 years with an unwavering commitment to Christ’s lordship and the authority of Scripture, the church said. God uniquely prepared Busenitz to serve the church through its next season while holding fast to MacArthur’s priorities, the statement added.

Busenitz grew up at Grace and attended the Master’s University and Seminary in Southern California, where he led several study and fellowship groups. Busenitz’s gift for preaching and shepherding became clear during his college and early ministry years, with his clear teaching and humble leadership, the statement added. Busenitz most recently served as executive vice president of The Master’s Seminary, where he also worked as a professor of historical theology.

Has Busenitz said anything? He gave thanks to God on Sunday while addressing the congregation for the first time after the elders’ vote. Busenitz voiced gratitude to congregants for investing so much in him throughout his life growing up at Grace. It’s a joy to serve alongside everyone, and there isn’t a sweeter group of saints to journey toward heaven with, he said.
