Jailed Chinese Nobel laureate given medical parole
Chinese officials have released Nobel laureate and activist Liu Xiabo on medical parole after learning he has terminal cancer. The 61-year-old was diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer on May 23 and is receiving treatment at a hospital in the northeastern city of Shenyang, close to where he was detained. Liu’s lawyer, Mo Shaoping, confirmed he’s in stable condition. Chinese authorities in 2009 gave Liu an 11-year sentence after he wrote a manifesto that called for democratic reform and an end to human rights abuses in China. Norway awarded him a Nobel Peace Prize the following year for his democracy and human rights efforts. His wife, Liu Xia, has remained under house arrest since 2010.
