Israeli Supreme Court hears arguments over judicial overhaul

All 15 of Israel’s Supreme Court justices on Tuesday gathered together for the first time in the nation’s history. A typical panel includes only three justices. The court heard arguments over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s judicial overhaul plan that would weaken the court’s power. Israeli citizens this summer held regular demonstrations to oppose the legislation, and thousands of protesters gathered Monday at the Supreme Court ahead of the hearing.

What is the controversial law? Netanyahu’s government in July passed the law to strip the high court of its ability to reverse government actions it deems “unreasonable.” Supporters of the law say the court should not have sweeping power over elected officials. Opponents have said the change could upset the balance of power and remove necessary checks on the government.
