Israeli PM Netanyahu could lose job
Opponents of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appear to be closer to a coalition deal that could end his 12-year run. A former ally of the prime minister, Naftali Bennett, leader of the Yamina party, announced Sunday that he will join a coalition to topple Netanyahu.
What would this new coalition look like? Bennett could be forming a power-sharing agreement with opposition chief Yair Lapid. That deal could see the two leaders rotating the job of prime minister over the next four years with Bennett holding the job first. To form a government, a party leader needs to secure the support of a majority in the 120-seat parliament. Netanyahu was unable to form a coalition before his deadline, so now Lapid has until Wednesday to complete the task. In the past two years, Israel has held four elections with each ending in deadlock.
