Israel reclaims control of Gaza border

Israeli forces on Tuesday increased airstrikes against downtown Gaza City as officials said they retook control of the Gaza border. In response, Hamas threatened to execute an Israeli captive for every home hit by air strikes. Hamas has killed more than 1,000 people in Israel, mostly civilians, since invading on Saturday, according to the Israeli military. Gaza officials say Israeli strikes have killed at least 900 people. Fourteen Americans have been killed by Hamas, President Joe Biden said Tuesday. Around 150 Israelis have been taken hostage. Meanwhile, the UN health agency said medical supplies positioned at seven hospitals in Gaza have been used up.

How are leaders responding? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his political opponents are considering forming an emergency unity government to lead through the conflict. The United States on Monday began delivering munitions to Israel. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is traveling to Israel on an urgent mission to show U.S. support for Israel, the State Department said Tuesday.
