ISIS militants kill 11 troops in latest Afghan terror attack

Islamic State militants on Monday killed at least 11 soldiers and injured 16 others when they attacked Afghan soldiers guarding a military academy in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul. The attack follows a spate of deadly insurgent assaults in Afghanistan, including a weekend bombing that killed more than 100 people. Dawlat Waziri, spokesman for the Afghan defense ministry, said two insurgents detonated suicide vests and three others engaged security forces in a gun battle near the Marshal Fahim National Defense University. Waziri said security forces killed two of the gunmen and arrested the third before regaining control of the area. “The attack was against an army unit providing security for the academy and not the academy itself,” Waziri said. The Islamic State affiliate in Afghanistan claimed responsibility for the attack through its Aamaq news agency. Both the Taliban and the Islamic State group continue to target Afghan security forces. On Sunday, authorities raised the death toll from a Saturday suicide bombing at a security checkpoint in Kabul to at least 103 people. Another 235 people sustained injuries in the attack. The bombing came a week after insurgents stormed a hotel in Kabul and killed 22 people, including 14 foreigners. The Taliban claimed responsibility for both attacks.
