ISIS claims affiliate planted London subway bomb
UPDATE: British police have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with Friday’s subway attack in London. The man, whom police did not identify, was apprehended by Kent police in the port of Dover on the English Channel. He is being questioned under the British Terrorism Act. Dover is a major ferry port for travel between Britain and France. Deputy Assistant Police Commissioner Neil Basu said the investigation was ongoing and the terror threat level in the country remained critical, meaning another attack could still be imminent.
OUR EARLIER REPORT (9/15/17, 4:17 p.m.): British officials raised the country’s terror threat level to critical, its highest point, shortly after Islamic State militants claimed an affiliated group carried out Friday morning’s London subway bombing. The threat level upgrade means officials believe another attack could be imminent. At least 29 people suffered injuries in the bombing. Health officials describe the wounds as mostly minor. Many victims suffered flash burns when the device exploded. Police continue to search for whoever left the bomb on the train during rush hour. After reviewing photographs of the device, one expert said it appeared the bomb did not fully explode, noting the damage could have been much worse. After the London attack, police in New York City beefed up security around its transit system, although they say intelligence officials have not heard of any specific threats against the city.
