ISIS attacks Save the Children in Afghanistan

Security officials in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday ended an hourslong militant attack that killed three people at the office of an international children’s organization. The attack began when a suicide bomber set off his explosives outside the office of Save the Children in Jalalabad. Attahullah Khogyani, spokesman for the Nangarhar provincial governor, said the attack ended eight hours later after security forces killed two other militants. The casualties include one civilian and two security guards. Zabihullah Zemarai, a provincial council member, said police officials rescued more than 40 people, the majority of them employees of Save the Children. At least 26 people, including six police officers, sustained injuries. Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement from its Aamaq news agency. Several aid groups, including the International Committee for the Red Cross and Amnesty International, condemned the attack. Wednesday’s assault follows a weekend siege on the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul that killed 22 people, including 14 foreigners. The Taliban claimed responsibility for that attack.
