Iran launches satellite-carrying rocket into space

Iran’s state media on Thursday said the country successfully launched a satellite-carrying rocket into space. The state television station identified the rocket as Simorgh, which means “phoenix” in Farsi. It said the rocket is capable of carrying a satellite weighing 550 pounds. Iran has pursued a satellite-launch program for years and sent several dummy satellites into space in past years. The United States previously voiced concern Iran could use the same technology to develop long-range missiles. Although the 2015 nuclear deal allows Iran to conduct satellite test launches, U.S. officials say they violate the spirit of the accord.
