An Iowa fifth grade teacher and student died this week after an accident on a school field trip to Lake Macbride State Park, authorities and school officials said.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded shortly after noon local time Tuesday to a report of people in the water at Lake Macbride State Park near the Coralville Reservoir spillway. At that time, responders recovered Hannah Jorgensen, 24, of Tiffin who was pronounced dead at the scene. They searched for the missing boy, but had to suspend the search until morning. Wednesday afternoon, the sheriff’s Office announced that they found the body of 10-year-old Ahmed Osman, of Iowa City.

The Iowa City Community School District said Jorgensen was a fifth grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary and Ahmed was a fifth grade student at the school.

Borlaug Elementary released a statement saying the accident occurred during a fifth grade School of the Wild field trip at the MacBride Nature Recreation Area. They did not provide details of the accident, but said they are heartbroken over the two lost lives. The district said counselors and additional support personnel would remain available at Borlaug Elementary.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds also offered her condolences following the deaths, saying the unimaginable loss would impact the entire community.

The sheriff’s office said the incident is still under investigation.
