Murder of Orthodox Rabbi sparks international outcry

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday reacted in shock to the kidnapping and murder of 28-year-old Rabbi Zvi Kogan in the United Arab Emirates. Kogan was a member of the Chabad-Lubavitch group of Orthodox Jews and held dual citizenship in Moldova and Israel. He went missing on Thursday.

In a social media statement, Netanyahu called the attack an act of anti-Semitic terrorism. He thanked UAE authorities for cooperating with Israel to investigate the murder. UAE’s Ministry of the Interior arrested three people in connection with the murder. State lawyers will not show any leniency for acts that threaten the stability of its society, the ministry said in a statement online.

Who was Zvi Kogan? The Chabad-Lubavitch organization described him as one of its emissaries, saying he was dedicated to serving the Jewish community in the UAE. He moved to the country with his wife Rivky, who survives.
