Indonesian volcano eruption kills at least 22

Mount Marapi, one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, erupted on Sunday, killing at least 22 climbers. Rescuers found three people alive, but later found 11 others dead. Officials said 75 total hikers were on the mountain on Saturday. Of that number, 49 were evacuated by early Monday, and many received treatment for burns. Sporadic eruptions slowed the rescue process, but a local rescue agency said teams were searching for the missing climbers on Monday.

How did Indonesia respond to the eruption? Officials have banned any activity within two miles of Marapi’s crater. Authorities have also distributed masks to nearby residents and advised them to remain indoors. Climbing routes and trails have been shut down. Flowing molten lava is a potential danger to roads and nearby rivers, according to officials monitoring the volcano.
