India’s death toll from monsoon rains reaches 100

Indian officials said on Thursday that 100 people have died from the record monsoon rains hitting the country. The monsoon has hit the Himalayan state Himachal Pradesh in the northern part of the country the hardest, causing it to receive more than 10 times its average rainfall. The state’s death toll has reached 88 since June 24, India-based Asian News International reported. Twelve other people recently died in monsoon-related incidents in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

What is India doing in response? For the hardest-hit areas, authorities have moved almost 30,000 people into relief camps and have converted schools into relief camps, New Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said in a statement Wednesday evening. Water rationing will begin due to the closure of water treatment plants, Kejriwal told reporters Thursday. He added that all schools, colleges, and universities will be closed until Sunday.
