India tests nuclear-capable ballistic missile

India test-fired a long-range, nuclear-capable missile Thursday from an island in the Bay of Bengal. The test, the fifth of its kind, “further strengthens our credible deterrence,” the Indian Defense Ministry said in a statement. The country has been developing its nuclear and missile systems in recent years to respond to perceived threats from China. Tension flared last year between the two neighbors over a disputed section of their border in the Himalayas. Already, India can strike at any target inside neighboring Pakistan, its archrival.
