Heavy rain displaces hundreds in Brazil

Search and rescue teams on Monday worked to locate missing people in Brazil’s northern Sao Paulo state. Heavy rain triggered landslides and flooding that killed at least 36 people and destroyed dozens of homes. Officials said at least 800 people are now homeless, and more than 1,700 were displaced. The city of Sao Sebastiao recorded nearly two feet of rain in a 24-hour period, twice the expected monthly rainfall.

How has this affected Carnival celebrations? Cities affected by the flooding have canceled Carnival events, while planned celebrations continue in other parts of the country. Carnival is a five-day festival that takes place ahead of the beginning of the Lenten season. This year’s parades and parties in Rio de Janeiro are the first normal Carnival events the city has held since the coronavirus pandemic began.
