Haley to UN: Kim Jong Un is ‘begging for war’

The UN Security Council held its second emergency session within a week Monday, calling for further sanctions against North Korea in response to the rogue nation’s nuclear test on Sunday. U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said the underground test of what was reportedly a hydrogen bomb indicates that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is “begging for war” and the time had come for the council to adopt its strongest possible measures. “Enough is enough,” she said. “War is never something the United States wants. We don’t want it now. But our country’s patience is not unlimited.” Haley added that the United States would circulate a resolution this week targeting countries that do business with North Korea with the goal of receiving council approval next Monday. “The United States will look at every country that does business with North Korea as a country that is giving aid to their reckless and dangerous nuclear intentions,” she said. “The stakes could not be higher.” Russia’s UN ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, told reporters Monday that sanctions alone will not solve the problem and called for negotiations as well. “Resolutions aimed solely at sanctioning North Korea have not worked well before,” he said. Japan’s UN ambassador, Koro Bessho, told reporters before the meeting, “We cannot waste any more time. And in order to do that, we need North Korea to feel the pressure, but if they go down this road there will be consequences.” The Security Council held a previous emergency session six days ago after North Korea launched a ballistic missile over Japan, an action the council called “outrageous.”
