Haitian transition council installed to prepare for elections

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry installed a three-member High Transition Council on Tuesday to prepare for general elections. The country has not held any elections since President Jovenel Moise was assassinated in July 2021, and the 10 remaining elected senators completed their terms in January. The council members also work with the government to reform Haiti’s constitution, implement economic reforms, and reduce gang violence.

What else is being done to address Haiti’s instability? In January, the United Nations and the Haitian government called for an international specialized armed force to be deployed to Haiti. Sanctions, asset freezes, and travel bans have also been imposed on gang leaders as violence contributes to political upheaval.
