Haitian protesters want president’s removal

Opposition leaders in Haiti on Monday called for continued nationwide demonstrations to demand the president step down. On Friday, protesters crowded the streets of the capital city of Port-au-Prince, blocking traffic and clashing with authorities. During a respite on Sunday, people queued up to get water and other basic supplies ahead of more protests.

What spurred the unrest? The demonstrators, who began assembling on a smaller scale about three weeks ago, are upset about public corruption, crippling inflation, and the scarcity of gasoline. President Jovenel Moïse, who assumed office in 2017, said he would not step down. The nation saw similar anti-government protests in February.
