Gunman who killed Swedes in Brussels shot by police
Authorities said they shot and killed a man who opened fire on Swedish nationals in Belgium on Monday night, killing two and injuring one. Videos posted to social media appeared to show a man pulling up on a scooter, brandishing a weapon, and firing at people on the street before chasing them into a building. The killings happened about three miles from a Belgium-Sweden soccer match. When word of the attack reached the stadium, the game was suspended. Thousands of fans were confined to the stadium for over two hours as a safety precaution before being allowed to leave. Belgium Prime Minister Alexander De Croo called the incident a “brutal terrorist attack.”
Who was the gunman? Police say the 45-year-old attacker posted a video online claiming to have killed three Swedish people and cited the Islamic State group as his source of inspiration. The gunman is believed to be from Tunisia and to have illegally immigrated to Belgium.
