NYC gunman who killed four planned to hit NFL office, mayor says

The shooter who opened fire inside a Manhattan office building Monday evening planned to target the National Football League’s headquarters, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday. Police identified the shooter as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old former high school football player from Nevada. Security camera footage showed the gunman parking a black vehicle, crossing a public plaza with an M4 rifle in hand, and entering the 345 Park Avenue tower shortly before 6:30 p.m. Once inside, he opened fire, killing police officer Didarul Islam, who was working as a corporate security detail at the time. He killed three others and injured a fifth victim before he turned the gun on himself on the 33rd floor, according to NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

What do we know about the victims? Officer Islam was a 36-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh who served as an officer in New York City for three and a half years. He and his wife had two children together. She is expecting their third child. Wesley LePatner, a real estate executive at Blackstone, also died in the attack, according to a company memo to staff. The other two deceased victims had not been identified publicly by Tuesday morning. An NFL employee was seriously injured in the shooting, according to the league.

What do we know about the shooter’s motive? Police found a three-page note in the shooter’s wallet that referred to the brain disease called chronic traumatic encephalopathy that afflicts some people who play contact sports. The note suggested he was angry with the NFL, though he only played football in high school in California. The shooter reportedly took the wrong elevators to try to get to the headquarters in the building, Mayor Adams said. He drove from Nevada to Manhattan this week, and authorities found ammunition and a loaded revolver in his vehicle, Tisch said.
