Globe Trot: What was Taliban leader Mullah Mansour doing in Iran?

AFGHANISTAN: I’m amazed at the way the United States tracked down Taliban leader Mullah Mansour before taking him out with a drone last week. Is anyone asking why the Sunni Taliban leader was “spending time” in Shiite-led Iran? Iran and a Toyota Corolla seem to figure often in the comings and goings of terrorist leaders.

JAPAN: U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday is set to become the first sitting president (of 11) to visit Hiroshima since the United States dropped an atomic bomb there, helping to end World War II. Between 40,000 and 50,000 Koreans were killed in the two nuclear bombings of Japan, but South Koreans hope the president doesn’t apologize for action that ended the Japanese occupation of their country.

SUDAN: Authorities released Sudanese pastor Telahoon (Telal) Nogosi Kassa Rata—held in prison without charges since December 2015—while continuing to hold Hassan Abduraheem Kodi Taour, the outgoing secretary general of the Sudan Church of Christ.

The Islamist government’s Janjaweed militias—who have long plagued Sudanese in the Darfur region of Sudan—are back, attacking Christian villages throughout the Nuba Mountain region, where an estimated 400,000 have been displaced by government attacks on the contested region.

KAZAKHSTAN: Authorities have carried out a string of raids on churches and Christian homes in Almaty. If you go to about 10:00 on this video clip, you can see one in progress.

UNITED STATES: A long-awaited review by the State Department’s inspector general has found former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton violated numerous security protocols in setting up a private email server and failing to preserve and account for her correspondence. The inspector general also found no legal review of the system by State Department counsel, though Clinton’s staff have claimed such a review took place. A review by the FBI is still pending.
