Globe Trot: The Great Kate Wait is almost over

The news you already know: The heir is almost apparent. And the #GreatKateWait is almost over.

In Egypt, supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi have clashed violently today with supporters of the change of government. The protesters were marching toward the U.S. Embassy and cars have been seen burning outside the U.S. and UK diplomatic compounds.

In France about 250 protesters clashed with police over the weekend after police checked the identity of a woman wearing a Muslim veil. France outlawed full-face “hijab,” or wearing the veil, in 2011.

Intense diplomatic pressure from Norway has apparently halted imprisonment and charges in Dubai for rape victim Marte Deborah Dalelv, who was imprisoned last March after she filed charges of rape as officials instead charged her under Sharia law of having extramarital sex. Today her defense attorney and staff from the Norwegian Seamans Church, where she stayed while her sentence underwent appeal, accompanied her to a hearing in the fast-growing Gulf city where authorities said they would pardon and release her to return to Norway. Dalelv was on a business trip to Dubai when the incident took place.

Three things are necessary in a post-Iraq and nearly post-Afghanistan era to avoid the “pipe dream of easy war,” writes Army Major General H.R. McMaster.

Pope Francis warned today that widespread global unemployment is creating a jobless generation. “Personal dignity comes from working, from earning your bread. Young people are in a crisis,” the pope said.
