Globe Trot: Pakistan's Musharraf indicted for Benazir Bhutto murder

A Pakistani court has indicted former President Pervez Musharraf in the 2007 assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. The charges come as Nawaz Sharif, whom General Musharraf ousted in a 1999 coup, again takes power.

An Egyptian court has ordered former President Hosni Mubarak released. He was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison last year for failing to stop the killing of some 900 protesters in Egypt’s 2011 uprising, but that sentence was overturned on appeal and is now being retried.

U.S. authorities captured an al-Qaeda courier who had in his possession a recording of a seven-hour, Internet-hosted meeting between more than 20 senior al-Qaeda leaders from around the globe—apparently sparking the recent global terror alert. The whole embassy-closure-alert episode is curious: If the “chatter” is real and this significant, why are U.S. intelligence officers talking about it?

And, speaking of protecting U.S. intelligence-gathering, new reports show “the NSA has the capability to track almost anything that happens online, so long as it is covered by a broad court order.” Documents released by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden have described NSA programs in narrower terms.

Secretary of State John Kerry has cleared the four mid-level State Department officials former secretary Hillary Clinton placed on administrative leave over the Benghazi, Libya, terrorist attack: “No explanation, no briefing, just come back to work. So I will go in tomorrow.”

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa called the State Department action “a charade” and promises to expand that investigation “to include how a supposed ‘Accountability Review Board’ investigation resulted in a decision by Secretary Kerry not to pursue any accountability from anyone.”
