Globe Trot: Nepal's earthquake victims still suffer, one year later
NEPAL: On the one-year anniversary of a devastating earthquake, Nepal is facing a record season of wildfires. The Himalayan country’s record-setting number of aftershocks and political dysfunction are keeping aid from reaching still-desperate victims.
SOUTH SUDAN: Drama and uncertainty surround the not-yet return of Riek Machar to South Sudan, where he was to take up his role as vice president, ending a coup effort begun in 2013.
AUSTRIA: Anti-immigration and anti-EU candidate Norbert Hofer won more than a third of the vote in the presidential election on Sunday and will face an independent in next month’s run-off. Victory for the Freedom Party candidate excludes the country’s two main parties from the runoff for the first time—signaling the political impact of the migrant crisis. About 100,000 asylum seekers have arrived in Austria since last summer.
ERITREA is one of the worst places in the world for religious freedom (and a key source of migrants heading to Europe). Just ask pastor Haile Naigzhi, who’s been jailed there since 2004.
UNITED NATIONS: Candidates vying to be the next secretary-general include Antonio Guterres, former prime minister of Portugal, who wants a global tax system administered by … the UN.
UKRAINE: Paul Manafort, the man behind Donald Trump’s remaking, has built a career working for shady political heads—including Viktor Yanukovych, the ousted Ukrainian president and Vladimir Putin ally who stirred strife in Ukraine leading to Russia’s annexation of Crimea.
ICYMI: The latest issue of WORLD carries an excerpt from my book, now on sale in bookstores everywhere. I’ll be in Washington on May 4 to speak about it at the Heritage Foundation.
