Globe Trot: Iran ratifies nuclear agreement, boasts of missile base

IRAN: Iran’s parliamentary panel has ratified the international nuclear pact that clears the way for its own atomic energy monitors to begin dismantling centrifuges and making other modifications. Once those steps are taken, the International Atomic Energy Agency will verify, and economic sanctions against Iran will be lifted. Even as the motions for following the pact began, senior U.S. officials said the sanctions relief portions of the pact may violate U.S. federal law. And Iran unveiled an underground missile base, boasting the facility is the “tip of the iceberg” of its military might.

ISRAEL: Israeli Defense Forces have fanned out across major cities following a wave of Palestinian assaults. Here’s a chronology of the weeks of stabbings and clashes.

PERU: Peru’s military appears to be aiding and abetting the country’s multi-million dollar cocaine trafficking industry. The country hasn’t jailed or arrested a drug dealer in years, and the country became the world’s leading cocaine exporter in 2012.

EGYPT: Police raided the offices of SAT-7, a leading Christian broadcaster with regional programming in Arabic, Farsi, and Turkish, and detained its director, saying the satellite channel didn’t have proper licenses.

ELECTION 2016: Last night’s Democratic debate underscores how persistent are questions over Hillary Clinton’s use of email during her tenure as secretary of state. As former State Department employees have explained to me, one crucial issue is who gave the department’s IT department clearance to reroute her email to her private email account, which would require using a different, and unsecured, server. IT services are run out of the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR), a shop run like “a little CIA,” I was told, with training sessions on use of email and other information typically taking place inside a soundproof vault. Some insiders say permission to reroute her email would have to come from the National Security Council or the White House. Perhaps tellingly, when asked about it by a House committee, the Clinton aide who allegedly set up the changeover invoked the Fifth Amendment.
