Globe Trot: European leaders hold migrant meeting in New York

PERSECUTION: Today in New York, 100 parliamentarians from 50 countries gather to discuss religious persecution and Europe’s migrant crisis. Germans are there in force, and WORLD is covering. On Twitter follow #NYCFoRB.

MIGRANTS: This graphic depiction of the exodus of migrants from Iraq and Syria should help to focus international responses.

SYRIA: Gen. Lloyd J. Austin, head of U.S. Central Command, told Congress this week that more than one year after launching a training program for more than 5,000 Syrian rebels, “maybe four or five” are actually actively fighting.

ISIS claimed responsibility for twin bombings in Baghdad yesterday that killed 24 and injured more than 120.

SAUDI ARABIA: About 1.2 million Muslim pilgrims have already arrived in Mecca for the Hajj, despite a crane collapse last week that killed 108 people at the pilgrimage site.

BRITAIN: One hundred years ago the world met Bertie Wooster and his immortal sidekick, Jeeves, not on PBS but in a Saturday Evening Post short story.

I’M READING: A new young adult story by sometime WORLD contributor and physician missionary Jennifer Myhre, A Chameleon, A Boy, and A Quest. Actually, I’ve already read and enthusiastically endorsed it for its authentic depiction of an impoverished childhood in Africa and the opportunity for redemption … everywhere.
