Globe Trot: Defiant Morsi rejects Egyptian court's jurisdiction


EGYPT: The trial of former President Mohamed Morsi opened this morning with Morsi’s defiant rejection of the court’s jurisdiction. The deposed leader declared he is still Egypt’s president. His case was adjourned until Jan. 8.

INDIA: India is set to launch on Tuesday its mission to Mars—the first Asian spacecraft to make the voyage.

SOUTH SUDAN: The disputed Abyei region of Sudan has voted overwhelmingly to join South Sudan.

AF/PAK: U.S. forces captured Latif Mehsud in Afghanistan a week ago. He wassenior deputy to Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud, who was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Pakistan on Friday (the two are not related). Instead of being the trophies Americans may imagine, taking out the two Taliban leaders actually may be complicating U.S.-Afghanistan negotiations on a bilateral security agreement.
