EGYPT: The trial of former President Mohamed Morsi opened this morning with Morsi’s defiant rejection of the court’s jurisdiction. The deposed leader declared he is still Egypt’s president. His case was adjourned until Jan. 8.

SOUTH SUDAN: The disputed Abyei region of Sudan has voted overwhelmingly to join South Sudan.
AF/PAK: U.S. forces captured Latif Mehsud in Afghanistan a week ago.
