Globe Trot: A 'banner month' for Islamic militants

NIGERIA: As Jeffrey Goldberg tweeted this morning, “just a banner month for Islamic militants.” Early Sunday morning, Boko Haram militants shot dead at least 40 students sleeping in a college dorm. We have a report that says the gunmen also set fire to classrooms, and puts the death toll at over 50 as bodies are still being carried out.

Boko Haram this morning also is reported to have killed seven people and burned vehicles at a village near its headquarters in Borno state.

IRAN: Protesters greeted President Hassan Rouhani with hurled eggs and at least one shoe as he returned to Tehran following his Friday phone chat with President Barack Obama. In the first conversation between Iranian and American heads of state since 1979, Obama phoned Rouhani and the two agreed to increase talks aimed at Iran’s nuclear program.

During the phone call, Obama also called on Rouhani to release Iranian-American pastor Saeed Abedini.

PAKISTAN:Disaster assistance has not kicked in after a 7.7 magnitude quake in Balochistan killed at least 300 people on Sept. 24.

SUDAN: Security forces in Khartoum opened fire on thousands of protesters Friday, as unrest in Sudan’s capital grows, and another Muslim state in crisis looms.

BOOKS: Tim Keller’s Walking with God through Pain and Suffering is due out tomorrow. A quote for today: “While other worldviews lead us to sit in the midst of life’s joys, foreseeing the coming sorrows, Christianity empowers its people to sit in the midst of this world’s sorrows, tasting the coming joy.”

I'm reading Benghazi: The Definitive Report as we continue to follow a stranger and stranger coverup.
