French government dissolves after prime minister ousted

French Prime Minister Michel Barnier on Wednesday resigned from office, saying it had been his pleasure to serve France. His resignation followed a no-confidence vote led by the La France Insoumise opposition party. The no-confidence measure also dissolved Barnier’s cabinet, the Associated Press explained.

Is French President Emmanuel Macron affected by this? La France Insoumise called for Macron to step down on Wednesday, saying that 63% of the French people support his resignation. But Macron has promised not to resign, choosing instead to serve out the remainder of his term until 2027, according to the Associated Press. Macron will need to appoint a replacement for Barnier, who now holds the record for the shortest stint as prime minister in France’s modern history, the Associated Press reported. Barnier was appointed in September.
